About the Designer & Our Inspiration:
Hans Wegner entered the 1938 Organic Home Furnishings competition at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. Later in 1963 he was still associated with the modernist Scandinavian design movement that created fluid designs by bending and molding woods for a natural softness. With over 500 chairs designed over a lifetime the Shell Chair or Smiling Chair is one of his most well known mass productions by Carl Hansen & Son. The frame is made of plywood and finished in a light oak stain.
Today our Thrive craftsmen have meticulously re-created this amazing design. Each chair requires 20 hours of detail work and 48 hours of wood shaping. The chair boosts three legs layered to create a soft arch with seating that allows you to to feel cradled. Our high quality fabric and imported Italian leathers allow you so many more choices to make this classic your own.
